Police Brutality and State Sponsored Terrorism
Trigger warning: Distressing imagery. Police brutality. State sponsored terrorism.
When Barack Obama visited India, he addressed the Indian parliament and said- “Greetings to the World’s largest democracy from the World’s oldest democracy.” The US likes to call itself the world’s oldest continuous democracy because of the narrow way in which it defines democracy. The truth is that it is not a democracy but a republic – A minor point, but one that is constantly misread. But this claim of being the oldest continuous democracy can only be met when the US counts its era of slavery as a period of democracy- a period when an entire population had no right to a life with dignity and respect.
In a similar fashion, India embraces this spirit and likes to call itself as the world’s largest democracy despite having enslaved 10 million people of Kashmir who are disenfranchised with rigged elections. The only continuous aspect of Indian democracy is the continuous state sponsored terrorism against a people seeking the right to life with dignity and respect.
