Kashmiri-Sikh Unity
On 25th March, 2020, a 400-year-old Sikh shrine in Shor Bazar of Kabul, Afghanistan was attacked killing 25 Sikhs, over the course of a 6-hour long massacre. According to Indian media, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack saying that it was revenge for India’s treatment of Kashmir. As Kashmiris, we unequivocally reject this reprehensible act of terror being perpetuated in our name.
Sikhs have always come to the aid of vulnerable Kashmiris, and even if we did not share a bond of brotherhood with them, Kashmiris would fight against the diabolical use of narratives that seek to legitimise terror on a vulnerable minority in the name of Kashmir. We cannot stand in solidarity by simply pasting a Facebook status. Standing in solidarity means accepting the common responsibility of protecting people.
Kashmiris have experienced the worst form of terror at the hands of the Indian state for 72 years and it is our personal responsibility to combat the people and the institutions who perpetuate it. Our suffering at the hands of Indian occupation does not legitimise the perpetration of the same atrocity on those who do not share our religion. If that were the case, there would be no difference between us and our oppressor.
